The Department of Magnetism and Magnetic Nanomaterials research area represents one of the most intensively developing fields of solid state physics. The first head of the Department of Magnetism from 1945 to 1947 was a famous magnetologist Shur Ya.Sh.. Later the department was transformed into the Department of Experimental Physics, but in 1958, re-established as the Department of Magnetism thanks to the efforts of Professor Parfenov V.V., who directed the department for nine years. From 1967 to 1983 Dunaev F. N. was the head the department; from 1984 to 2003 it was directed by Ivanov O.A. Since 2003 Vas’kovskiy V.O. has been the head of the Department of Magnetism and Magnetic Nanomaterials. Many famous physicists-magnetologiests were the department members: professor Yanus R.I., corresponding members of the USSR and Russian Academy of Science Shur Ya.Sh., Mikheev M.N., Derjaguin A.V., Mushnikov N.V. Over the years more than 1000 specialists in the field of physics of magnetic phenomena and metrology graduated from the department.

At present, the department offers two specialties in comprehensive scientific and technical areas. The Physics of magnetic phenomena (magnetism) is the scientific area related to the phenomena in which the magnetic interactions play a critical role. The main research activity of the department is connected to the physics of magnetic materials, in recent years transformed into the physics of magnetic nanomaterials, which includes functional media containing structural elements of nanometer scale. It includes the study of the relation of crystal and electronic structure of solids to their macroscopic magnetic, electrical, optical, and mechanical properties along with development and improvement of specific materials for electrical power energetic, automatics, microelectronics, and computer components. Metrology is the science of measurements. The main problems of metrology are: general theory of measurements, formation of physical units and systems, methods and measurements (including nanomeasurements), methods for determining the accuracy, ensuring the uniformity of measurements, the elaboration of standards, and methods for translation of units from standards to measuring tools.

The research activities of the department rest upon the intellectual potential and reach experience of the scientific school “Physics of Magnetic Phenomena” of the Ural Federal University. The school was formed in the middle of 20 century as a result of active scientific research in the field of magnetic materials in the Urals region and organization of the Department of Magnetism in the Ural State University. The founder of the school was Shur Ya.Sh., physicist-magnetologist, doctor of science in physics and mathematics, corresponding member of USSR Academy of Science. He received wide recognition among foreign scientists and scientists in Russia as an organizer and leader of basic research in the physics of magnetic materials. The scientific school is represented by 15 doctors of science (including 3 corresponding members of Russian Academy of Science) and 45 PhD. At present the school is directed by Vas’kovskiy V.O., the head of the Department of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials of the UFU, and Kudrevatykh N.V., doctor of science, senior scientific researcher, the head of the SRI of Physics and Applied Mathematics INS UFU, the director of the Department of Magnetism of Solids of SRI PAM. Training of highly qualified specialists is organized at the faculty of postgraduate and habilitation (to obtain the doctor of science degree) of the UFU on scientific specialty 01.04.11 "Physics of Magnetic Phenomena". The dissertations on this specialty can be defended at the dissertation council D 212.285.24 of the UFU.
